Climate

• May is one of the most comfortable and pleasant seasons to visit Japan.
• Average temperatures:
Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto: 15°C to 25°C( 59-76℉)
Hokkaido: 10°C to 20°C(50-66℉)
• Low humidity and many sunny days.
• Warm during the daytime but slightly chilly in the mornings and evenings.
• Okinawa and southern areas may start the rainy season (tsuyu) in late May.
Clothing

•Light long-sleeve shirts or T-shirts with a light jacket or cardigan are recommended.
• Mornings and evenings may require an extra layer.
• Essentials: comfortable walking shoes, sunglasses, a hat, and a compact umbrella for sudden rain.
Seasonal Foods

• May is a great season to enjoy fresh Japanese ingredients.
• Bamboo shoots (takenoko): delicious in rice dishes and tempura.
• First bonito (hatsugatsuo): fresh sashimi or lightly seared tataki.
• Broad beans (soramame): simple and tasty when boiled.
• Matcha sweets: matcha parfaits and desserts, especially in Kyoto.

• Strawberries: popular at sweets buffets and shops.
Events

• Art and music festivals: outdoor concerts and art exhibitions in major cities.
• Beer festivals: enjoy craft beer festivals across Japan.
• Children’s Day (May 5): colorful carp streamers (koinobori) are displayed throughout the country.

Festivals

• Kanda Matsuri (Tokyo, Kanda Shrine): mid-May, held in odd-numbered years (2025). One of Japan’s three great festivals with parades and portable shrines.
• Sanja Matsuri (Asakusa, Tokyo): mid-May, The biggest festival in Tokyo, famous for dynamic over 100 mikoshi (portable shrine) parades.
• Aoi Matsuri (Kyoto): May 15, featuring a traditional parade in Heian-period costumes.

• Many smaller spring festivals are also held across Japan.
Golden Week Travel Tips
• Golden Week is the time many Japanese people take holiday and travel in and out Japan.
Period: late April to early May (April 26 to May 11, 2025).
• Expect heavy crowds at tourist sites, full bookings for trains and flights, and higher hotel prices.
• Traffic jams are common on highways.
• Reserve transportation and accommodations in advance.
• Check real-time traffic information if you are driving.
