Nakasendo Road

Narai bridge

The Nakasendo was developed by the Shogunate as one of the highways starting from Nihonbashi, Edo( old name of Tokyo) .

The five directions starting from Nihonbashi, Oshu, Koshu, Nikko ,Tokaido and Nakasendo were called the “Five Highways”.

Although Nakasendo passes through mountainous areas, it was considered easier to schedule a trip than Tokaido Highway.

Because in Tokaido highway , there are large rivers and impassable to cross when the weather is bad.

This time, we will visit Narai-juku, Tsumago-juku, and Magome-juku, which retain the atmosphere of the Edo period.

Narai-juku is a post town located in the middle of the Nakasendo highway , about the same distance from Edo ( old Tokyo)and Kyoto.

It was called “Narai Senken(1000 houses)” and was crowded with many travelers.

Even today, the townscape stretching about 1 km still retains the atmosphere of the Edo period.

In order to cope with depopulation from the 1960s, the townscape was preserved in an effort to revitalize the area.

In 1976, it was selected as the first national landscape district to be preserved, attracting tourists from Japan and around the world.

Both sides of the road are lined with freshly baked rice crackers, oyaki, gohei-mochi, souvenir shops, and old-fashioned cafes where visitors can enjoy eating and strolling.

The 9km trail between Tsumago and Magome Inns is a road that retains the atmosphere of the Edo period.

There are beautiful rivers, waterfalls, and old-fashioned rest stops.

You can enjoy the atmosphere as if samurai might appear.
