Sumo stable

There are two ways to become a sumo wrestler.

One is to leave one’s hometown at the age of 15 and live and train with other wrestlers in this sumo stable.

The other is to join a sumo club in high school or college, accumulate experience, and become a professional sumo wrestler.

Today, all of the rikishi are living together in the same stable.

Morning practice

Rikishi begin their practice before 8:00 a.m.
The procedure is as follows.

Shiko:

Step on the ring with one foot on each side of the ring alternately. This strengthens the legs and hips.

Surisashi:

Practice walking on the ring keeping the soles of the feet off the ground.

If your feet are firmly on the ground, you are less likely to be knocked down by your
opponent.

Soji:

Cleansing the ring before each practice session.

Mousiai :

Practice pushing the opponent.

Teppo:

To strengthen the pushing power of the arms they push the pillar of the corner.

Tsukiji Outside Market

Tsukiji market

The Tsukiji Outside Market is located around Tsukiji Market, which was the world’s largest fish market from 1935 to 2018.
Although the market functions have moved to the new Toyosu Market, the Tsukiji Outside Market still attracts many tourists from Japan and abroad.

Namiyoke Shrine

Namiyoke shrine

After the great fire of Meireki Era, the reclamation of the Tsukiji area was extremely difficult due to repeated high waves.

One day, a shining deity was discovered on the surface of the sea and enshrined here.

The shrine is famous for its huge lion’s head, which is paraded through the town of Tsukiji on a portable shrine during festivals in early June!
