Climate
December is a cold season in Japan.
Temperatures range from 5 to 15 degrees ℃( 50-57 ℉).
On the Pacific Ocean side, sunny days prevail in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima.
On the other hand, Kanazawa and Nagano on the Sea of Japan side have colder weather with more clouds and snow.
Clothing
Layered clothing is recommended.
Jackets, down wear, etc. are necessary in case of cold weather.
Coats, gloves, hats, and scarves are useful.
Nabe, hot pot dishes
December is the season to enjoy Nabe( hot pot) dishes.
There are countless types Nabe dishes with different materials and ingredients.
Many restaurants offer this winter dishes.
If you visit the local part of Japan, they offer local specialty Nabe too!
Illumination Events
You can enjoy beautiful illuminations in many tourist destinations, especially the major Tokyo, Osaka,Kobe and Kyoto.
In Tokyo, Omotesando, Roppongi, Shibuya, Marunouchi, etc.,
Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi prefecture is popular.
Nakanoshima and Midosuji in Osaka, and temples and shrines in Kyoto are illuminated at night.
Christmas
Christmas is a big family season in Japan.
There are a lot of toys displayed in many toy shops!
Also Christmas markets are held in major cities and tourist spots.
Christmas trees are decorated in many places, and the whole town is in a Christmas mood.
New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
December 31 is called OOMISOKA, “New Year’s Eve,” when people eat soba noodles on to pray for long life.
In addition, 108 bells are rung at night at temples throughout Japan. This is said to be the number of human desires.
Also, many people go out from midnight to go their first visit to shrines and temples on the following day, New Year’s Day.
This is the busiest day and time of the year for shrines and temples.
The most of the big malls and amusement parks, restaurants open on this period.
The family run places are mostly closed.
Tourist Attractions
Most of the best sightseeing spots, especially on the Pacific Ocean side, have refreshing clear skies.
So you can take beautiful pictures at any of the sightseeing spots.
Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Hiroshima, etc. are recommended.
On the Sea of Japan side and in Hokkaido, a large amount of snow falls and snow resorts open from December.
There are 607 registered snow resorts in Japan.
Gala-Yuzawa and Karuizawa Prince Snow Resort are only about an hour away from Tokyo.
Families can enjoy skiing, snowboarding, and sledding.
