Dogo Onsen (道後温泉) is said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan, with a history of over 3,000 years.
It’s one of the country’s most famous onsen resorts and a must-visit destination for those seeking traditional Japanese culture and relaxation.
A Historic Hot Spring

Dogo Onsen is even mentioned in ancient Japanese texts.
AD596, Shotokutaishi( imperial prince) visited here to heal his sick.
Also the Nihon Shoki (The Chronicles of Japan AD720) wrote about here.
According to legend, an injured white heron healed itself by bathing in the spring.
Then people found this hot water has the restorative powers.

The heart of the area is the Dogo Onsen Honkan.( main building)
It’s a beautifully preserved wooden bathhouse built in 1894.
