Takayama Hand-Fire festival

Takayama hand-fire festival

Summer in Tokyo is very hot and humid.

I came to Takayama City in Gifu Prefecture , the middle of Honshu island to escape this heat.

Takayama City is located at an elevation of nearly 600 meters above sea level, making it cooler than Tokyo and very comfortable in the mornings and evenings.

The nearby mountains of the Japanese Alps are easily accessible, making it a great place for those who like hiking like me!

Festivals

Gion festival in Takayama

Takayama City is also home to the famous Gion Festival in spring and fall.

I visited this time for a summer HIDUTSU festival, held on August 9 every year.

This is a festival that is drive away yaku (8,9 in Japanese” evil spirits”) and wishes for good luck from the sparks of fireworks and its sound.

The fireworks are not ordinary fireworks, but a person holds a 1-meter long firetube.

It blows out sparks with a roaring sound, ending with an explosion.

Since the festival is held on the banks of the Miya River, there were many people enjoying the fireworks on both banks of the river.

History

This firework has a history of more than 450 years, its roots in Aichi Prefecture during the War-States Period in the 16th century.

Hidutsu fire pole

Takayama is close to Aichi Prefecture and it seems to have been introduced there.

This is the 36th festival of this form, and it has become famous as a festival to drive away evil spirits.

Miyagawa river

The festival takes place after sunset, from around 7:30 to 9:00 pm at Miyagawa river.
