It’s opened in 1964, the park is internationally known as a “monkey park”where wild Japanese monkeys can be observed up close.

This is the place tourists can observe the ecology of monkeys in the wild.

The park is located at the far end of Jigokudani Onsen (hot springs) in the valley of the Yokoyu River.

This river originates in the Shiga Kogen Plateau of Nagano Prefecture.

It takes 3 hours drive from Tokyo.

In front of the public park is Shibu’s Jigokudani fountain, which spouts nearly 100 degrees of spring water.

It’s very dynamic!!

Climate

At an elevation of 850 m, there is a snowfall of over 1 m in winter.

Also the minimum temperature falls below -10 ºC during the winter months.

Japanese macaques bathing in the hot springs in winter are known as “snow monkeys” .

Their images of Jigokudani Onsen are often used in media reports in Japan and abroad, and are featured in Time magazine.

The park is also visited by tourists from Japan and abroad, despite its inconvenient accessibility.

You have to walk 25 minutes from the car park.

Still there are approximately 100,000 visitors per year .

Monkey bathing in my
In the park, visitors can observe wild Japanese macaques that come down from the mountains in both summer and winter.

In winter time they soak in the onsen but in summer, they don’t go inside the bath , play around it.
