‘MATSUO SHRINE, the hidden tourist spot in Kyoto-2’
I visited MATSUO shrine in west part of Kyoto. It’s located at the bottom of the west hill of Kyoto. The real object of worship is high up the mountain 223m. The object called ‘IWAKURA’ and people offered prayer from the ancient time here . AD 701 the local powerful family felt the presence of God and founded this shrine.
I like this shrine because it’s not popular like other famous shrines and temples, so it’s very calm and quiet.
There are 3 mysterious Japanese gardens in this shrine.
1: KYOKUSUI NO EN( 曲水の宴)
2:JOKO NO NIWA( 上古の庭)
3: HORAI NO NIWA( 蓬莱の庭)
1 is designed with beautiful small winding stream like ancient aristocrats played by floating the paper boat on it .
2 is the rustic model of the object of worship ‘IWAKURA ‘of this shrine .
3 is designed to represent the HORAI( heaven ) by rocks and with pond where many KOI fish in it .
These Japanese gardens are made in 1975 by MUREI-SHIGEMORI, the famous modern garden artist and his son.
It’s 500yen ( 5 dollars) to enter ,the 3 gardens are included.
The combination with Japanese gardens and back drop mountain forest is beautiful and mysterious .
