Dazaufu Tenmangu shrine
I went to Dazaifu Tenmangu shrine in Fukuoka prefecture.
This is a shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, an aristocrat and scholar, founded in 919 in Dazaifu, Kyushu.
Sugawara no Michizane
Sugawara no Michizane was transferred from Kyoto to Dazaifu by a conspiracy in 901, and died there in 903 with sadness.
The purpose of the shrine was to appease the vengeful spirits of him.
Grudge
Because the emperor’s family and aristocrats who repeatedly died unexpectedly after Sugawara no Michizane’s death is believed to be caused by Sugawara no Michizane’s haunting.
Several hundred years later, after the haunting of Sugawara no Michizane had calmed down, he came to be believed to be a god of learning because he was a brilliant scholar.
Plum trees
There are 6000 plum trees here, we can enjoy them from early February to mid March.
We can see huge impressive trees here which are very old.
In from of the shrine there are many souvenirs shops, cafes and restaurants.
