Why don’t you see another side of Okinawa in cape Hedo?
I’m Nobu, I like traveling overseas and in Japan, visited 25 countries. I’ve got the license of the certificate English guide in Japan for 8 years.
I show you hidden Japan which you have never seen and heard of!
Cape Hedo
Cape Hedo is located at the northernmost tip of Okinawa Island.
It takes 2 hours and 30 minutes by car from Naha Airport.
The highlight is the view of the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea from the cliffs of the uplifted coral reef.
If the weather is clear, you can see Yoron Island and Okinoerabu Island in Kagoshima prefecture beyond the majestic sea.
Monument
At the center of the cape is the Monument to the Struggle for the Return to Japan from US.
It was erected in 1972 as a sign that Okinawa, which had been under American rule, was returned to Japan and became Okinawa Prefecture.
It is said that a ceremony to raise the flag for the reversion of Okinawa to Japan was held when the island was under US rule until 1972.
Cape Hedo was also a place to pray for peace.
Yanbaru national park
Cape Hedo is designated as a National Park, and the promenade is safe for the elderly, baby carriages, and wheelchairs.
However, stay away from the rocky areas where there are no fences.
If you want to see the beautiful ocean that you can see all the way to the bottom, I recommend going around noon when the wind is light and the weather is clear.
Yambaruina Observatory
This is located near the entrance to Cape Hedo, a short walk down the coastline from the Usahama ruins.
It is an observatory in the shape of a giant Okinawa bird, Yanbarukuina 11.5m tall.
I think it’s much larger and more realistic than you might imagine.
If you see it for the first time, you might be a little surprised.
You can enjoy the beautiful view of the coastline around Cape Hedo from the observatory.
The observatory is built around the chest after climbing the stairs inside the Yambarukuina statue.
It’s not like the central and southern parts of Okinawa, where there are many beautiful beaches.
The southern part of Okinawa is characterized by a dynamic landscape of cliffs and semitropical forests.
