Hamahigajima island
I went to a remote island in Okinawa called Hamahigajima island.
It takes about an hour to get there by car from Naha Airport.
But it is connected by a bridge, so it is easy to get there.
Creation legend
There are several places in Okinawa where the legend of the creation of the world has been passed down.
The common thread is that two gods, a man and a woman, came down to the island, and then the people of Ryukyu( old name of Okinawa)increased.
They are called Amamichu and Silmichu in Hamahigajima.
Silmichu holly place
It is said that this Silmichu holly place is the place where they made their home.
The sacred site of Silmichu is located on a small hill in the south of Higa Village.
If you drive there, there is enough space at the end of the road to park your car.
After parking your car there, you will have to climb more than a hundred stairs.
Unlikely other holly places in Okinawa, there is a Torii gate.
In Okinawa there is almost nothing ( no building, no gate ) in the holly places.
Limestone cave
At the top of the stairs is a limestone cave where two gods are said to have lived and had children.
At the beginning of the year, Noro (people who pray to the gods) from Higa village pick up a pebble from the beach and put it in a jar in the cave.
On this day, many people from outside Hamahigajima island visit the cave to pray.
It is said to be a place of great spiritual blessings for women.
Especially for prayers to be blessed having a child or for safe delivery.
