You should know some things about Tattoos in Japan before visiting
It’s because tattoos as cultural perceptions and facility rules are quite different from many other countries.
This guide will help you understand the history, the rules, and the best ways to enjoy your trip without trouble.
Tattoos in Japanese Culture

Tattoos in Japan have a complex history.
For centuries, they were used for decoration or spiritual purposes.
In the medieval age they also became associated with criminal punishment and later with the yakuza (organized crime)people’s symbol.

Because of this, tattoos still carry a negative image for many people, especially the older generation.
Today, younger Japanese often view tattoos as a form of fashion or body art, but the stigma has not completely disappeared.
Rules at Town,Beaches,Onsen(natural hot baths), Sento( public baths)Pools, and Gyms

•It’s no problem you expose your tattoos in the town.
•Most of the beaches are okay but still you check the beach before going.
• Many Onsen ( natural hot baths)facilities still display “No Tattoos Allowed” signs, it’s from the request of the police.
Because family users scare and uncomfortable with Yakuza( Japanese mafia) people with tattoos.
The yakuza people make small trouble with ordinary people.( bullying)
• Sento( public baths) are more tattoo friendly.
Check before going.
• Pools and water parks have the same restrictions.
•Some of the gyms may have the same restrictions.

• Use tattoo cover stickers or skin-colored tape to hide them.

• Choose a private or family bath (kashikiri onsen) where you won’t have to share with others.
• Wear a rash guard or T-shirt at pools or beaches.
