I went to Ofuna Kannon temple.
This is a huge 25 m statue of the Kannon Buddha on top of a hill.
It’s visible from JR Ofuna Station just be the hill.
White Kannon statue
I have passed by this station many times on my way to Kamakura .
And when I saw it, I thought it’s huge and
white and big figure is impressive.
History
Originally, the erection of the temple was planned in 1929 and almost completed in 1934.
However, it was interrupted by the Great Depression and the war.
After the World War II, it was completed in 1960.
It’s registered as a Soto sect Buddha school 1981.
The upper half of the Kannon was built on a slightly elevated hill.
The interior of the womb
Turning to the back, the interior of the womb can be entered.
There are small statues of Bodhisattvas, a smaller scale statue of the Kannon Buddha and stupas, etc.
Outside
There is also a temple bell and a Jizo Buddha statues outside.
And meditation hall too.
Also there is a memorial cenotaph for the Atomic Bomb Victims.
Scenery
Since the temple is located on top of a hill, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the town of Ofuna.
Everyone was sitting on the benches and enjoying the view.
