Kochi Prefecture – The Land of Clear Rivers, beautiful Kochi castle, tasty market foods, dynamic beach, and Warm Hearts!
Hi I’m Nobu, I like traveling overseas and in Japan, visited 28 countries!
I’m a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter of English for 12 years.
For the people who are interested in and planning trip to Japan ,
I show you hidden local information which you have never seen and heard of through books and ordinary site!
You will find unexpected fun through my articles!
I visited Kochi prefecture in Shikoku island!

Kochi prefecture

It’s located on the southern coast of Shikoku Island, Kochi Prefecture is blessed with dramatic coastlines, lush mountains, and some of Japan’s purest rivers.
It’s a region where nature and tradition coexist beautifully.
The legendary samurai Ryoma Sakamoto one of the most popular Samurais in Japan was born here.
The energetic Yosakoi Festival that fills the summer streets with dance and color is also from here!
Also Kochi is famous for its Katsuo no Tataki (seared bonito), Yuzu citrus, and the Niyodo Blue — the breathtakingly clear blue hue of the Niyodo River.
It’s a perfect destination for travelers who love scenic drives, river adventures, hot springs, and authentic local culture.
Harimaya Bridge (はりまや橋)

Located in central Kochi City, Harimaya Bridge is a small red bridge with a big story.
It was originally built in the Edo Period for merchants to cross a moat and became famous through a local love legend.
Today, it’s known as a romantic photo spot — a symbol of love and connection.
The bright red color contrasts beautifully with the modern city surroundings, making it an iconic landmark of Kochi.
Katsurahama Beach (桂浜)

Katsurahama is one of Kochi’s most famous scenic spots.
It’s overlooking the vast Pacific Ocean.
The beach is known for its white sand, pine trees, and the towering statue of Ryoma Sakamoto, a hero of Japan’s modernization.
Although swimming is prohibited due to strong waves, the area is perfect for a relaxing stroll or sunset viewing.
Nearby attractions include the Katsurahama Aquarium and the Ryoma Memorial Museum.
Hirome Market (ひろめ市場)

Located just a short walk from Kochi Castle, Hirome Market is the beating heart of Kochi’s local food scene.
Inside this lively indoor market, over 60 stalls serve everything from fresh seafood and Katsuo no Tataki (lightly seared bonito) to ramen, sushi, and local craft beer.
It’s not just a place to eat — it’s a place to meet locals, share long tables, and enjoy Kochi’s friendly atmosphere.
Whether you come for lunch, dinner, or late-night drinks, Hirome Market offers an unforgettable taste of Kochi’s warm hospitality.
Nagose Chinka Bridge (名越沈下橋)

The Nagose Chinka Bridge is one of Kochi’s unique “submersible bridges,” designed to sink underwater during floods.
Built without railings, it symbolizes harmony between humans and nature.
Surrounded by peaceful countryside landscapes, it’s a perfect spot for photography and to experience rural Japan at its most tranquil.
Niyodo River (仁淀川)

Known as the “Miracle Clear Stream”, the Niyodo River boasts some of the clearest water in Japan.
Its mesmerizing blue hue, called “Niyodo Blue”, attracts nature lovers and photographers from around the world.
Visitors can enjoy canoeing, SUP (stand-up paddleboarding), fishing, and riverside hiking.
The upper stream areas like Nakatsu Gorge and Yasui Valley offer some of the most stunning natural scenery in Shikoku.
Nakatsu Gorge (中津渓谷)

Located in the upper reaches of the Niyodo River, Nakatsu Gorge is a magical valley where crystal-clear water flows through moss-covered rocks.
A well-maintained walking trail allows visitors to see waterfalls, giant boulders, and serene forest scenery in about an hour.
Highlights include Uryu Falls and Pillar Rock Waterfall. In autumn, the gorge glows with colorful foliage, while in summer, it offers refreshing coolness.
Oodo Dam Bridge (大渡ダム大橋)

The Oodo Dam Bridge stretches over the vast Oodo Dam Lake, providing panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and the Niyodo River basin.
The reflections of the sky and forest on the calm lake surface change with the seasons, offering spectacular views year-round. It’s a great stop for photographers and travelers driving through the Niyodo Blue area.
Naka Kuroiwa (中黒岩)

Naka Kuroiwa is a striking rock cliff rising above the Niyodo River.
Its dramatic, vertical shape gives it the nickname “The Screen Rock of Niyodo.” The rock face glows with different colors depending on the sunlight and time of day, creating a mystical atmosphere.
It’s a hidden gem for nature photographers and those seeking a peaceful yet powerful natural spot.
