Setagaya BOROICHI(Setagaya’s rag market)
I’ve been to Setagaya’s rag market!
It’s one of the biggest flee markets in Japan which held twice in the year 15,16th January and 15,16th December!
There are more than 700 small shops which sell various items including old clothes, antiques, old books, plants, kimonos, Shinto shrines, foodstuffs, and plants.
400,000 people gather in 2 days!!
The various food stalls are also very enjoyable!!
History
Setagaya’s rag market has continued since 1578.
It was an exchange place for farmers.
They sold their products and bought farming tools here.
Intangible Folk Cultural Asset
It is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Asset by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.
The market is also famous for the once-every-five-year procession of the Samurai magistrate.
A “hometown farmer products exhibition” is also held at the venue.
Access
The location is between Setagaya station and Uemachi station of Setagaya line.
It’s 25-30 minutes from Shibuya and Shinjuku.
