Aokigahara jukai ( sea of forest)
It’s in the Fuji Hakone Izu national park,
the big leisure area for camping and enjoy nature.
It’s located in the north west of Mt.Fuji.
Aokigahara used to be home to the largest lake in Japan, ‘Senoumi’.
The great eruption of 864 caused a massive flow of lava to the northwest of Mt.Fuji
The two lakes Saiko lake and Shojin lake were the edge of lava and were the part of Semoumi.
This was reported to the Imperial Court at the time and was documented.
Geographic character
The ground of Aokigahara is hard because of lava, so it is difficult for tree roots to penetrate the ground.
Therefore, there are many roots sticking out of the ground.
The surface of the flowing lava dries up when it comes into contact with the air, and the inside still flowing becomes a double structure like a straw that keeps flowing.
The outer tube remains, and it is the windhole that has caved in.
There are several caves where we can see indide.
The area from Aokigahara to the mountains is particularly densely populated with black bears and other large mammals such as Japanese monkeys, Japanese serows, Japanese deer, and Japanese wild boars.
Rumors
Rumors of the Suicide Forest are like this.
It was the setting of a novel in 1959 by famous author Seicho Matsumoto, which is a tragic love story.
Then some woman died here with the novel in her purse or using the novel as a pillow, which was picked up in the news.
There is also a rumor that the compass sometimes does not work because of the lava ground.
Moreover, British Air ( BOAC) Boeing 707 had a mid-air breakdown in 1966.124people died near here.
It’s caused by the turbulence.
Civilian aircraft are not allowed to fly over the site.
I think this regulation is because there is a Self-Defense Forces training area nearby though.
And the GPS doesn’t work at all this area.( It’s true)
