Hozuki festival at Sensoji Temple
This year, the rainy season finished at the end of June.
After that, these days are a series of midsummer-like days over 35℃.
July 9th and 10th are the days of the Hozuki festival at Sensoji Temple in Asakusa.
It is said that if you visit the market on these days, you will have the same merit as if you had visited the temple for 46,000 days!
Start of Summer Festivali
Today is the 9th, and there were many people wearing yukata, the Japanese summer festival clothes.
It is already summer festival season in Japan.
Hozuki (Japanese hollyhock)
Hozuki was originally sold as a medicinal herb.
It was said that an infusion of hozuki was good for children’s canker sores and women’s tantrums.
And it was customary to take it home as a souvenir of the festival.
200 stalls
Hozuki festival are held at Sensoji temple and other temples and shrines in Tokyo.
But the Sensoji temple’s festival is the most famous.
Every year 200 stalls line the temple grounds, selling hozukis (Japanese hollyhock) to the accompaniment of lively shouts of encouragement.
Wind bells
Wind bells attached to pots ring coolly.
These are said to be a summer tradition in Edo period.( 1603-1868)
