Shiba Inu

The Shiba Inu is a small Japanese dog with a cute expression and a smart and brave personality.

Shiba inu

The Shiba Inu is a national natural treasure of Japan and is popular worldwide.

And there are currently around 600,000 Shiba Inus in the world.

The ancestor of Shiba Inu

However, all the Shiba Inus alive today have inherited the bloodline of a single male dog.

That male dog was born only 91 years ago, and was sent from the mountains of Shimane prefecture to Tokyo to lay the foundation for the Shiba Inu.

This story is actually famous in the Shiba Inu world, but I’m sure there are many people who have never heard of it.

I had never heard of it before either.

What kind of dog was the male dog that gave rise to this story?

Shiba Inu after 1868

After Japan opened its borders to the outside world in 1868, crossbreeding with Western dogs brought to Japan progressed.

As a result, the number of pure Japanese dogs rapidly decreased.

In 1928, the Society for the Preservation of the Japanese Dog was established, and in 1936, the Shiba Inu became a national natural monument of Japan.

Ishi( stone) the ancestor of the Shiba Inu

The dog that became the roots of the Shiba Inu was born in 1930 in Futagawa Village (now Masuda City), located in the mountains of Shimane Prefecture.

His name was Ishi( stone). He is an ancient Japanese breed of Sekishu dog that lived in the Iwami region of western Shimane Prefecture.

The local hunter kept him as a hound.

Mr. Tsurukichi Nakamura, a native of Shimane Prefecture, ran a dental clinic in Tokyo.

Mr.Nakamura

He is a dog lover, Tsurukichi kept dogs in Tokyo and exhibited them at the exhibitions of the Japanese Dog Preservation Society.

Mr. Tsurukichi often visited Shimane Prefecture in search of an excellent Japanese dog, Sekishu Inu.

He met Ishi there, who was being kept by a hunter deep in the mountains.

Handsome Ishi

Ishi, the ancestor of Shiba inu

He had small, thick, forward-leaning ears, a broad forehead, well-stretched cheeks, a thick proboscis, well-pigmented eyes, and has a reminiscent of thorns.

Of course, Ishi had ancestors as well. According to the pedigree that remains at the Japan Dog Preservation Society, Ishi’s parents were both from Shimane, his father “Kuhara” and his mother “Kochi.

However, there is no further detailed information about his parents or their ancestors.

So the oldest ancestor of the Shiba Inu for which detailed information remains is Ishi.

Ishi was discovered by Tsurukichi and moved from the mountains of Shimane to Tokyo, where he won a prize at the fifth exhibition of the Japanese Dog Preservation Society in 1936.

In 1939, he had a male Shiba Inu named Aka with a female Shiba Inu named Koro from Shikoku.
How about the story of Adam and Eve of Shiba Inu?
