Yes in Japan people pay respect for the belongings of us often.
We call it’ FUDE ZUKA’ literally means’ pen thumb’.
If you come to Japan you often see this kind of thumbs in many shrines .
The thumb for ‘ ox’ which supply us their meat, ‘ chop stick ‘ which we enable to eat foods , ‘ whale ‘ which offers us their meat etc…
It’s a Shinto way to pay respect for everything around us .
I don’t think it’s common in foreign countries, but it’s a typical Japanese way .
If you visit the shrines in Japan, check the memorial thumbs in there.
The approach of this shrine is a beautiful long stairs and the precinct is surrounded by plum trees and other flowers, nice combination with history and nature .
You will feel the Japanese way of thinking and culture!
