Daisetsuzan is the largest national park on Hokkaido which protects a mountainous area of nearly pristine wilderness .

It’s almost the size of some of Japan’s smaller prefectures. It’s a haven for hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, deer, and brown bears. Also the first site in Japan to witness colorful autumn leaves and snow.

Many climbing enthusiasts explore the highest peaks of the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group’s 2,000 meter-class summits every year.

Mt.Asahidake in winter

If you go to Mt.Asahidake, the “Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway” is the easy access route.

It costs 3200yen( 32 dollars) by return ticket.

Asahidake rope way

The “Daisetsuzan Asahidake Ropeway,” which extends from Higashigawa-cho to Sugatami Lake (1600 meters above sea level) and gives visitors easy access to the mountain. It is one of the area’s most unique features.

There are attractions for every season, from being the first site in Japan to see the spectacular, changing colorful autumn leaves to snow activities from winter through spring. No matter how many times you visit, you will never be bored.

The base area there is a Asahidake Onsen , modest hot spring resort and one of the most comfortable starting points for visiting Daisetsuzan National Park.

Only around a dozen buildings, wooden lodges, a lovely youth hostel, and two or three major hotels make up the small community. The hotels and the ropeway station are the only places where you may shop and eat.

The Asahidake Visitor Center, located near the ropeway station, provides weather forecasts, maps, explanations about the national park, and other tourist information.Several hotels and ryokans offer onsen for non-stay visitors too.

After climbed Mt.Asahidake I and my son soaked in the onsen at hotel Bearmonte , which is just 2 minutes walk from the Asahidake rope way station. It cost 1190yen( 11.9 dollars) and they have open air bath, sauna and jacuzzi very relaxing!
