Azalea park in Tatebayashi City
I went to Azalea Park ( Tsutsujigaoka) in Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture.
As the name suggests, it is a famous place for azaleas.
There are so many azaleas that some researchers say it is not only the best in Japan but also the best in the world.
History
The area around the park has long been home to azaleas.
It was called “Tsutsujigasaki” from ancient times.
Successive generations of Tateyama Castle lords, azalea enthusiasts, and the local government have worked to protect and nurture the azaleas.
There is a 5-meter-high azalea tree that is over 800 years old.
There is also the azalea loved by Nitta Yoshisada’s wife in 14th century .
Numerous Azaleas
Today, there are more than 10,000 azaleas of more than 50 varieties.
On December 28, 1934, the area was designated as a national place of scenic beauty.
This large park stretches around south part of the pond called Shironuma pond ,3.8 km east to west and 180 m wide.
There are pleasure boats and paddle boats at Shironuma pond.
Also we can see numerous carp streamers across the pond until May.
And it is a good place to spend a relaxing time with your family and friends.
You can also enjoy the many carp streamers fluttering in the Shironuma pond until May.
How to go here
I recommend renting a bicycle at Tatebayashi Station.
You can also take a taxi or a bus, but since the park is very large, it may be tiring to look around on foot.
A taxi from Tatebayashi Station to Azalea Park takes 5-6 minutes and costs about 1,300 yen(13 dollars) , while a bus costs 200 yen ( 2 dollars) and takes 11 minutes.
The Tatebayashi Hills Hotel, located at the east exit of Tatebayashi Station, has 10 free rental bicycles available at the hotel front desk.
It takes about 10 minutes from here to Azalea Park.
The admission fee is 630 yen( 6.3 dollars)
