I went to Mt. Azuma in Kanagawa Prefecture.

It is a 136.2m mountain overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

And located in a place called Ninomiya in Kanagawa Prefecture.

We can go there by 25minute walk from Ninomiya Station along a gently sloping path.

This is where Yamatotakeru, the hero of Japanese mythology, landed in the 4th century and stopped here.

When he could not make it ashore because the sea was so rough, his wife threw herself into the sea to appease the sea gods.

The sea calmed down, and Yamatotakeru was able to land safely.

But Yamatotakeru, grieving over his wife’s death, buried her comb here and enshrined it.

The name of the shrine comes from the words he cried, “Oh, my wife.”
